Last week's speaker was Reavis Z. Wortham, the author of the critically acclaimed Red River historical mysteries.  He gave a very entertaining talk about how he wanted to become a writer since he was eight years old, but never managed to be able to sell his work until later in life.  He succeeded because he never gave up.  He kept writing even while making a career as a teacher, although not commercially successful.  But it was always his dream to become a writer, and eventually it clicked!

His first novel in the series, The Rock Hole, was listed by Kirkus Reviewsas one of their Top 12 Mysteries of 2011. Recently, True West Magazine included Dark Places, the 5th novel in the series, as one of 2015’s Top 12 Modern Westerns. Dark Places is a finalist for the Will Rogers Medallion Award. His new high octane contemporary thriller series from Kensington Publishing features Texas Ranger Sonny Hawke and will be released in July, 2017.

One of the goals he has with his writing is to preserve the historical accuracy of the way people lived during the period covered by his stories.

He expressed his appreciation to his teacher from so many years ago that encouraged him to follow his dream.

His message to everyone - Never give up on your dreams!

Thought For The Week:

Interesting Rotary Fact:

A Rotarian Action Group is an autonomous group of Rotarians, family members, program participants and alumni who are experts in a particular field, such as microcredit or water and sanitation. Group members share their expertise by collaborating with clubs and districts on service projects.

For example:

  • The Rotarian Action Group for Population Growth & Sustainable Development partnered with Rotary clubs in Germany, Austria, and Nigeria to reduce maternal death by 50 percent at 10 hospitals in northern Nigeria with a program to prevent and treat obstetric fistula, a serious birth injury.
  • Rotarians for Family Health & AIDS Prevention and Rotary club members from Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda sponsored a three-day event to provide HIV testing and counseling for more than 138,000 people.
  • The Water and Sanitation / Hygiene Rotary Action Group (WASRAG) helped evaluate the WASH in Schools project our club is participating in Nicaragua.
